Today is World Arthritis Day – This year’s theme challenges us to imagine an Australia where arthritis and chronic musculoskeletal pain no longer limit anyone’s potential.
One lesser-known form that often affects young men is Reactive Arthritis — formerly known as Reiter’s Syndrome. It’s an inflammatory arthritis that develops after certain bacterial infections, particularly in the urinary or gastrointestinal tract.
Men aged 20–50 are most at risk, especially after Chlamydia trachomatis or foodborne infections like Salmonella or Campylobacter.
Joint pain or swelling (knees, ankles, feet), heel or low back pain, eye inflammation, and sometimes skin rashes or fatigue — typically appearing 1–4 weeks after infection.
Most recover within 6–12 months, but some experience recurrent or longer-lasting symptoms.
Remedial and myofascial techniques can assist in reducing stiffness, improving joint mobility, and easing compensatory muscle tension during recovery. Combined with gentle exercise and an anti-inflammatory diet, these can support pain management and restore function alongside medical care.
Today we acknowledge the work of Arthritis Australia and Musculoskeletal Health Australia – MHA for their tireless advocacy, research, and education helping Australians with arthritis live full, active lives.
Let’s continue empowering men to stay informed, seek early care, and keep moving toward their goals — pain-free.
