World Cerebral Palsy (CP) Day

On this World CP Day, we shine a spotlight on a crucial aspect of Cerebral Palsy (CP) that often goes underreported: CP in men. CP is a non-progressive neurological disorder that impacts movement, posture, and muscle control. While CP affects people of all genders, males often encounter distinct challenges on their journey. Today, we acknowledge their strength, determination, and the need to raise awareness and support for men living with CP.

The “man facts” on CP:

1️⃣ Approx. 12 million of the 18 million people living with CP are men, a ratio of 1.5 to 1
2️⃣ In studies that classify CP severity by levels of motor function, males were more frequently affected across all levels
3️⃣ Males are represented in most types of CP, both at the mild and severe ends of the spectrum, particularly in bilateral spastic and diskinetic CP
4️⃣ In bilateral spastic CP, males have a higher incidence of lower limb deformities and walking difficulties
5️⃣ Males are at greater risk for adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes and severe motor impairment

World Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) Day

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a type of inflammatory arthritis that primarily affects the spine and sacroiliac joints. While AS can affect both men and women, men are up to 3 times more likely to develop AS than women.
According to the Australian Rheumatology Association AS affects around 2-3% of Australians, or around 650,000 people. Of these, approximately 70% are men.
A study published in The Journal of Rheumatology in 2019 found that men with AS in Australia had higher disease activity, more spinal fusion, and more severe symptoms compared to women with AS.
Another study published in the journal Arthritis Care and Research in 2018 found that men with AS in Australia had a higher prevalence of depression and anxietyΒ compared to women with AS.
AS symptoms include pain and stiffness in the back and other joints, fatigueΒ and reduced mobility with symptoms usually appearing between the ages of 15 and 45.
Manual therapy, which involves hands-on techniques such as massage, joint mobilisation and stretching, is a common treatment for AS.
A 2016 systematic review found that manual therapy was effective in providing short-term pain relief, reduced stiffness, and improved spinal mobility in people with AS.
