World Cancer Day

🌟 Today, on #WorldCancerDay, let’s shine a light on an often overlooked aspect of cancer treatment: lymphoedema. For men battling #melanoma or #prostate cancer, the journey doesn’t always end after treatment. Lymphoedema, a chronic condition characterised by swelling due to a compromised lymphatic system, can persist, impacting daily life.

But there’s hope and help available! Meet @renshawtrent, our ALA accredited lymphoedema practitioner, specialising in abdomen, genital, and lower limb oedemas. Trent is dedicated to supporting men through assessment and management of chronic oedemas, offering expertise in manual lymphatic drainage, compression bandaging, and prescribing compression garments.

With Trent’s guidance, decongestive exercises become tailored solutions, empowering individuals to reclaim comfort and mobility. Let’s spread awareness and support those navigating the complexities of cancer survivorship. Together, we can make a difference. 💙

Rattle Ya Bones this Halloween!

🎃ðŸĶī #RattleYaBones this Halloween! ðŸĶīðŸ‘ŧ

Let’s scare away the Top 5 Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) that tend to haunt male athletes. These spooky injuries can turn your favourite sports into a nightmare. ðŸ˜ą

ðŸŠĒ Sprains and Strains: Among the most prevalent injuries, these affect ligaments (sprains) and muscles or tendons (strains). Examples include ankle sprains and hamstring strains, commonly occurring during athletic activities that involve sudden movements, twists, or impacts.

💊 Tendonitis: Inflammation of tendons due to repetitive movements or overuse. Common examples include Achilles tendonitis (common in runners) and tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis), often seen in tennis players or golfers.

ðŸĶĩ Knee Injuries: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears and meniscus (cartilage) tears are prevalent, especially in sports that involve quick changes in direction or high-impact movements, like soccer, basketball, or skiing.

🍖 Muscle Tears: Ruptures or tears in muscles due to sudden acceleration, deceleration, or direct impact. Examples include hamstring tears (frequent in sprinters and soccer players) and quadriceps tears (common in athletes involved in explosive movements).

ðŸĐŧ Stress Fractures: Tiny cracks in bones resulting from repetitive stress, often found in weight-bearing bones like the shin or foot due to high-impact activities such as running or jumping.

Manual therapy techniques such as myofascial release, soft tissue release, joint mobilisations, and deep tissue massage have all been shown to aid in rehabilitation. These techniques can help ease sprains, strains, and tendonitis by reducing tension and inflammation, improve joint function and reduce stiffness during ACL and meniscus tear recovery, and promote healing while minimising scar tissue formation in muscle tears.

World Arthritis Day – Gout!

🏈 Today, on #WorldArthritisDay, we’re focusing on a condition that hits athletes hard – #Gout! 🏃ðŸŧ‍♂ïļðŸĶķ

ðŸĪ” What is gout?
Gout is a form of arthritis caused by the accumulation of uric acid crystals in the joints, leading to intense pain, swelling, and inflammation. Gout can affect anyone and any joint but often targets the big toe and is 4 times more common in men than women.

ðŸĪ·â€â™‚ïļ What causes gout in athletes?
– 🍔 Diet: High-purine foods (like red meat and seafood) can increase uric acid.
– 💧 Dehydration: Athletes sweat more and need to hydrate properly to avoid gout.
– 🧎 Genetics: Family history can play a role.

🙌 How can remedial massage techniques help?

1. Transverse Frictions: Break down uric acid crystals, reducing inflammation and discomfort.
2. Joint Mobilisations: Disperse uric acid crystals, alleviating pain and addressing the root cause.
3. Lymphatic Drainage: Reduce swelling and aid uric acid crystal elimination, promoting recovery.

Got gout? Take a step towards relief. DM, call 0266519622 or visit Coffs Coast Sports Physiotherapy to book with MT @renshawtrent today.

World Mental Health Day – Touch for Men’s Health

💚🌏 Today on #WorldMentalHealthDay, we are exploring the profound benefits of touch and the vital role male MTs play in providing a safe space for men to heal ðŸ‘ĻâĪïļâ€ðŸĐđ

We’re proud to complement the incredible work being done by organisations like @MeNtorsForMen, @bridgingthegapcoffs, and the Men’s Resource Centre for men’s mental health, as together, we bridge the gap between mental health awareness and practical, hands-on support 👐ðŸĪ

Here’s why it matters:
1ïļâƒĢ Connection: Human touch is a powerful tool for connecting with others, reducing feelings of isolation, and promoting a sense of belonging. A massage from a male MT can create a safe space for men to open up and share their thoughts and feelings.
2ïļâƒĢ Stress Reduction: Massage therapy has been proven to reduce stress and anxiety levels, offering clients a mental respite from the pressures of daily life and opportunity to find mental clarity.
3ïļâƒĢ Self-care: Men often neglect self-care, but it’s vital for mental health. Male MTs emphasise the importance of self-care beyond the massage session, empowering men to adopt self-compassion and self-care practices that extend into their daily routines.
4ïļâƒĢ Emotional Release: Human touch fosters a sense of trust and comfort, encouraging men to open up emotionally. Sometimes, the most significant breakthroughs happen during a massage session.

And to all the men out there, remember that seeking help, talking about your feelings, and embracing human connection is a sign of strength, not weakness. 💆‍♂ïļðŸ’Š

Let’s continue to break down the stigma surrounding men’s mental health and encourage open conversations. Call or visit Coffs Coast Sports Physiotherapy to book a session with MT
@RenshawTrent – you might be surprised at how healing a simple touch or conversation can be. 💎💙

World Cerebral Palsy (CP) Day

On this World CP Day, we shine a spotlight on a crucial aspect of Cerebral Palsy (CP) that often goes underreported: CP in men. CP is a non-progressive neurological disorder that impacts movement, posture, and muscle control. While CP affects people of all genders, males often encounter distinct challenges on their journey. Today, we acknowledge their strength, determination, and the need to raise awareness and support for men living with CP.

The “man facts” on CP:

1ïļâƒĢ Approx. 12 million of the 18 million people living with CP are men, a ratio of 1.5 to 1
2ïļâƒĢ In studies that classify CP severity by levels of motor function, males were more frequently affected across all levels
3ïļâƒĢ Males are represented in most types of CP, both at the mild and severe ends of the spectrum, particularly in bilateral spastic and diskinetic CP
4ïļâƒĢ In bilateral spastic CP, males have a higher incidence of lower limb deformities and walking difficulties
5ïļâƒĢ Males are at greater risk for adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes and severe motor impairment

R U OK?

💛👌 R U OK day @ruokday reminds us of the vital role touch and human connection play in our lives. Massage therapy embodies this connection, offering a silent language of comfort and understanding.

In the midst of life’s challenges, a well-timed massage can be a lifeline, offering relief from stress, anxiety, and depression. It’s a reminder that someone cares, that they are present, and that they are “here to hear”, even without words ðŸŒŧ☀ïļ

Men’s Health Week 2023

It’s Men’s Health Week 💙 and the theme this year is Healthy Habits 🍎

Here are some small lifestyle changes men can make to improve their health and wellbeing:

ðŸ”đ Connect. Engage in social activities to foster connections and reduce feelings of isolation.
ðŸ”đ Sleep. Ensure adequate sleep by establishing a consistent bedtime routine.
ðŸ”đ Drink. Staying hydrated ensures proper functioning of all bodily systems.
ðŸ”đ Move. Prioritise regular activity, aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise most days.
ðŸ”đ Eat. Adopt a balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains.

Massage therapy can be a valuable addition to these habits.

Regular massages can boost immune function, enhance mood, provide mental relaxation, and promote better sleep. It can also help reduce muscle tension, improve flexibility, reduce the risk of injury, and aid in post-workout recovery.
