What is oncology massage?

Oncology massage is not about pressure — it’s about precision.
For people living with or beyond cancer, the body often carries the effects of treatment long after appointments finish. Surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, hormone therapy and immunotherapy all leave a mark — physically, neurologically, and emotionally.
Oncology massage is a clinically informed form of massage that is carefully adapted to the individual. Pressure, positioning, timing and techniques are modified based on cancer history, current treatment, lymphatic risk, nerve sensitivity, bone health and fatigue. This is what makes it different — and why specific training matters.
Research and guidance from major Australian cancer centres recognise oncology massage as supportive care. When appropriately delivered, it may help reduce pain, ease fatigue, support sleep, calm the nervous system and improve overall quality of life — alongside medical treatment, not instead of it.
Just as importantly, it challenges a persistent myth: massage does not spread cancer. What matters is who is providing the care and how it is adapted.
At The Athlete’s Guild, oncology massage is offered with clinical screening, clear scope, and collaboration where appropriate — supporting people at every stage of cancer care, from diagnosis through treatment, recovery and survivorship.
If you’re navigating cancer yourself — or supporting someone who is — informed, individualised care can make a meaningful difference. Choosing a practitioner with appropriate oncology-specific training helps ensure care is delivered safely, thoughtfully, and with clinical understanding.
